More than US$12.1 billion in virtual purchases move in Peru

Last year, online debit operations increased by nearly 50% in Peru, according to Visa Consulting & Analytics, thus representing the highest growth in Latin America. According to the Peruvian Chamber of Electronic Commerce (Capece), more than US$12.1 billion in virtual purchases are moved in the country.

Currently, more than 60% of Peruvian households use cards to make purchases and in our market there are more than 8 million credit cards and almost 44 million debit cards. This is how, in the last year, the cards achieved a penetration of 63%, two percentage points more than in 2022, according to data from the study ‘How do we pay for our mass consumption purchases?’, by Kantar.

Likewise, the report specifies that payments with debit cards had an increase of 9%. However, despite the fact that their use in online purchases increased, credit cards continue to be the leading means of electronic payment in Latin America, with a 50% share in electronic commerce and 20% in face-to-face payments.

According to the seventh wave of the study ‘1,000 Peruanos Say’, by Omnicom Media Group (OMG), 46% of compatriots make online purchases on websites, such as Falabella, Tottus or Sodimac; 39% do so through supermarket apps, such as Plaza Vea, Wong or Metro, and 36% do so through delivery apps, such as Rappi or Pedidos Ya. In that sense, it is important to also highlight the use of digital wallets, such as Yape or Plin, with more than 80% of users using this payment method to make their purchases.
