What is the history of the Maestro and Sodimac stores?

Maestro began as a chain under the name Ace PerĂº on June 5, 1978. Its first store was opened in 1994. In 2006 it changed its company name to Teacher Home Center and gradually expanded into a larger format of home improvement stores. However, in 2014, the Solari family, owners of Falabella, acquired the Peruvian chain.

For its part, Sodimac was born in Chile as the Construction Materials Distributor Company in 1952, but in 2023 the Falabella Group bought the chain and in 2005 it arrived in Peru. This way, An integration of both brands begins and in 2018 they unify their RUC to be called Tiendas del Mejoramiento del Hogar SA.

Maestro stores, as we currently know them, will go through a total reconversion process. The premises will be remodeled and reopened under the name of Sodimac. In 2022, the first conversion of a Maestro store to Sodimac was carried out in Arequipa, and in 2023, two more restructurings were carried out in Cusco and Chiclayo.

The process continues and the objective is for all Maestro stores to become Sodimac. “In the coming years, the main focus of regional expansion will be on opening stores in Mexico and the conversion of the Maestro store chain in Peru towards the Sodimac brandin order to enhance the value proposition, reach more customers and improve margins through a more complete and profitable assortment,” said the Falabella group in its 2023 Annual Report.

Why will Maestro stores become Sodimac?

The reconversion responds to the search for greater operational efficiency and a better purchasing experience. Falabella seeks to consolidate its leadership in the sector. This change will allow improvements in logistics, directly benefiting consumers.

Sodimac stores offer a wide variety of products including construction materials, hardware, furniture, garden items, decoration and more, aimed at both home and professional and corporate customers.

Teacher vs. Sodimac: how many stores of each brand currently exist?

After the first three reconversions in Arequipa, Cusco and Chiclayo, There are 32 Sodimac establishments and 24 Maestro stores in Peru. The transition will increase Sodimac’s presence and strengthen the brand’s ability to serve a greater number of customers, expanding its geographic reach and market penetration.
