During his last participation in the Congressional Economy Commission, the head of the MEF, José Arista, assured that public spending can improve from a cut in the total number of existing ministries.
“I don’t know whether to shrink the State, which covers between 18% to 20% of GDP, but we do have to improve the efficiency of spending. Suddenly, reduce the number of ministries,” he commented.
Although the session in which Arista participated focused on the reform of the pension system, The official stressed that current spending has increased by more than S/11,000 million in the last 2 years, to the detriment of investment capacity.
“The more current spending there is, the less investment there is (…). The municipalities, regional governments and the interior have less money for hospitals,” he said.
Arista affirmed that the State needs to collect more taxes because the tax pressure fell to 14.5% last year and the slogan of his administration is to bring it to 15% or 16%.
