AFP Retirement 2024: what did the Minister of Economy say about the possible new disbursement?

AFP Retirement 2024: what did the Minister of Economy say about the possible new disbursement?

After almost a week of its approval in the Economy Commission, the ruling that allows AFP members to withdraw up to 4 UIT (S/ 20,600) from their individual accounts remains undated on the Congress agenda. This working group’s final proposal would allow money to be taken from its funds not only to the unemployed, but also to all taxpayers.

Despite the pressure exerted by members of various groups who proposed the bill, it was not scheduled for the April 3 session of Congress, when it was expected to have the necessary votes for its approval. However, the new minister pointed out that there would be consequences if a new withdrawal of the AFP is carried out.

AFP Retirement: what is Minister Arista’s position?

The Minister of Economy, José Arista, was invited to the extraordinary session of the Congressional Economic Commission to address the prediction proposed by the Law on Modernization of the Peruvian Pension Systemin which he did not rule out the idea of forming a commission and working with the Legislative Branch.

It is important to remember that, in the current pension system, workers contribute a percentage of their salary to an individual account managed by an AFP (Pension Fund Administrator).

In accordance with the current regulatory framework, AFPs can invest in stocks or bonds to generate the highest profitability, always safeguarding the retirement pension fund.

However, the head of the Economy portfolio also spoke about the decision to withdraw from AFP if it were approved in Congress.

Obviously, all withdrawals before the retirement deadline weaken the systembut the system also has some aspects that must be improved, we have to pass laws that promote that,” the minister said in recent statements to the press.

Could the executive observe the withdrawal of the AFP if it is approved in Congress?

The head of the MEF has expressed dissatisfaction with the decision to withdraw AFP that was approved by the Economy Commission. Therefore, he has not made it clear whether he would intend to observe the bill if it is given the green light.

“It has just been approved in the Economy Commission. All the potential consequences that this decision could have will be evaluated with them. I could not anticipate now what actions could be taken because the decision is not in the hands of the Executive, but rather the Legislature.“, the official explained to the press at that time.
