Anchovy: second season 2023 will not be considered to meet 80% of the catch limit

Anchovy: second season 2023 will not be considered to meet 80% of the catch limit

The Ministry of Production (Produce) determined, exceptionally, that the second fishing season for anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and white anchovy (Anchoa nasus) resources in the north-central zone in 2023 will not be considered for compliance by part of the shipowners, of the obligation to extract 80% of the maximum catch limit per vessel – LMCE.

Ministerial resolution No. 000103-2024-PRODUCE indicates that, between October and November 2023, “two warm Kelvin waves arrived, which would have been reinforced by the westerly wind anomalies in the month of September (Enfen-2013)” .

The thermal conditions of the sea in the first three weeks of December remained within normal limits off the northern and southern coasts, and warm in the central zone. However, towards the end of December and beginning of January 2024 “an increase in positive anomalies was recorded off the northern coast, associated with the arrival of the expected warm Kelvin wave.”

These conditions, according to Imarpe, brought with them an impact on the north-central anchovy stock during the second fishing season of 2023, with a low availability of adults and high availability of individuals smaller than the minimum capture size.

“Spatially, individuals below the minimum size were mainly distributed within the 10 nm coastal strip, which extended from Paita to Pisco, while outside this strip a greater presence of adult individuals was observed,” refers to the resolution.

In this way, Produce certifies that there were anomalous oceanographic situations that affected the normal performance of the fishing activity, “thus complying with the necessary scientific evidence.”

Thus, the second 2023 fishing season for the anchovy resource, in the north-center, will not be considered for shipowners’ compliance with the obligation to extract 80% of the maximum catch limit per vessel.
