Inbound tourism will close this year without reaching pre-pandemic levels. Madeleine Burns, Deputy Minister of Tourism, projected that 3.2 million foreign tourists are expected to arrive this year.

“We do not want to measure ourselves again against 2019 (4.6 million). What we want is to look forward and find a way to generate a greater number of tourists. This is the work we are engaged in (…) We work for the 10 million tourists,” he said.

The preliminary figure for inbound tourism in the first quarter of the year is 25% higher than that of 2023, Burns added. That is, we would be approaching 70% of what was the first quarter of 2019.

Likewise, ris high that the border with Tacna plays a vital role in the entry of foreign tourists, and now covers 28% of the total registered.

Growth opportunity

What would significantly impact the growth of tourism is the Choquequirao project. We would be talking about an annual increase of S/4.3 million. Economic impact that could be reflected after 20 years of operation. Likewise, the cable car would encourage the arrival of more than 1 million 248,000 tourists per year and would generate a greater number of direct and indirect jobs for the regions of Cusco and Apurímac.
