The economic movement that is projected for Holy Week from March 28 to 31 will reach US$195 million throughout the country, an amount 20% higher than the similar period in 2023, revealed Juan Carlos Mathews, Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, after the session of the Council of Ministers.
It is expected that 1 million 400,000 tourists will travel through the various attractions that Peru has; this, according to Minister Mathews’ calculations, is 17% more than in the 2023 campaign.
Likewise, he said that Holy Week is a particularly relevant date because it is one of the two iconic dates, together with National Holidays, which somewhat marks the behavior of domestic tourism in the year.
Favorite destination
Regarding the favorite destinations for visitors, Lima stands out, followed by Ica, Junín, Ayacucho, Piura, among others. “We have a diversified offer on the coast, mountains and jungle, with tour operators offering promotional campaigns,” Mathews stressed.
In this sense, the head of Mincetur highlighted that one of the sectors that has shown greater resilience was the tourism sector, which had a growth of 25% in inbound tourism and close to 30% in domestic tourism.
According to official information, in the first two months of this year some 509,128 foreign tourists arrived, 69.7% more compared to the same period in 2023. However, the Foreign Trade Society of Peru (Comex Peru) warns that the arrivals of Tourists registered between January and February 2024 are still 30% lower than in 2019, exactly before the arrival of Covid-19 in the country.
