The Minister of Economy and Finance, José Arista, assured that the debate on increasing the minimum living wage (RMV) could be resumed in the second half of the year, if the country’s economic recovery is consolidated first.

In dialogue with ‘RPP Noticias’, the head of the MEF assured that, in any case, “this is not the time” to raise the minimum wage given the conditions of the country. The last time the RMV was raised was in April 2022, when it went from S/930 to S/1,025.

“I still think that this is not the time to discuss an increase in the minimum living wage. Let’s hope that the economy gains momentum in this growth, hopefully we can reach 3% or something more. (…) In the second semester, Once this growth is consolidated, it will be a topic to talk about the minimum living wage,” Arista said.

At another time, the minister acknowledged that GDP needs to grow much more than 3% this year, but that there is still the great barrier of the low collection obtained in the previous year. Regarding inflation, he said that 2024 should close even above the target range.

“We must aspire to grow at rates close to 5% on average to once again bet that poverty is reducing and that the well-being of the most dispossessed classes is improving,” he assured.
