So far this year, the average price of chicken has continued to increase. According to the Supply and Price System of the Ministry of Agrarian Development (Midagri), per kilo of the bird went from S/10.38 in January to S/12.05 in the retail markets – that is, the closest and most influential for the household economy.

This upward trend has been recorded since the second half of last year, when the kilo of chicken oscillated between S/9.00 and 10.60 —some weeks it fell to values of S/7.00 and S/8.00— .

The Republic confirmed that in the main retail markets of Metropolitan Lima, said food continues to have high prices. For example, in the Aurora Market it has fluctuated between S/11.50 and S/12 for a month.

Meanwhile, in the Rímac Limoncillo Market, fell slightly S/0.50 and merchants offer it at S/12.50. Here, Businesses have asked their suppliers to reduce stock because there are not many sales.

Meanwhile in The Forest (San Juan de Lurigancho), the average per kilo of chicken is S/10.50 and S/11.50. As a result of the school campaign, some positions have decided to lower their cost a little more, since families prioritize spending on education. And, in Caja de Agua (SJL), this gutted food is S/11.50.

Why is the price of chicken still expensive?

Julio Velarde, president of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP), commented that per kilo of chicken became more expensive due to high temperatures, as well as avian flu — which also affected eggs. In the banker’s opinion, “this month (March) one price correction is expected” and even “two.”
