The impact of AI on the Peruvian labor market: new careers, unemployment and reskilling

The advancement of technology and the implementation of artificial intelligence It has led to the creation of new jobs related to programming and machine learning.

Along these lines, we spoke with Ingrid Ccoyllo, Computer and Systems engineer, and Technology specialist at Tecsup, who provided us with data on the new professionspossible unemployment and how to face a labor market that is adapting to the artificial intelligence.

The new careers created by AI

In 2022, ChatGPT is launched worldwide by OpenAI and although the initial lack of knowledge of the new tool generated various impressions; Well, some thought that it would replace jobs, while others saw it as an ally to simplify work tasks, the truth is that AI has arrived to influence our decisions.

“We are seeing that lives are being transformed and with the trends (young people) are going to have to use artificial intelligence even to decide their future,” said Ccoyllo.

Likewise, Ccoyllo tells us about the new professions based on AI: “They are basically careers that have to do with the technological aspect, for example: Artificial Intelligence engineering, Machine Learning engineering, cybersecurity, software design and development, and also a career that is making its way is blockchain“. Likewise, he indicated which careers such as data analysis will be the most in demand due to the changing nature of this new technology.

What will happen to the classic races?

For young people who are studying or have studied a classic career such as Law, Communication or Medicine, Ccoyllo advises them to do ‘reskilling’, which translated into Spanish means ‘retraining’.

“If you see that that career (that you are studying or studied) is going to be possibly replaced by AI, then I recommend that you learn to use tools that are related to your career. Not only does ChatGPT exist, there are multiple counseling tools, tools that are being developed for each race.

It is worth mentioning that the engineer explained that, although “the AI ​​will perform certain repetitive jobs or help with data processing, ultimately the person who makes the decision will always be the person, because since (the AI) uses data that is stored in supercomputers, one of their data may not match or may not have worked well. So, you should never take what the AI ​​says as 100% true, we always have to do a final check on it.”

Should artificial intelligence be regulated in Peru?

In this regard, Ccoyllo explains to us that at Tecsup, the institution where he works, has opened an Intelligence Observatory, which will be in charge of accompanying students on the issue of regulations and guidelines that must be taken into account. “I cannot use an artificial intelligence tool and treat it as valid or as if it were my own creativity,” he said.

Likewise, he emphasizes that in Peru there is already a law that regulates the use of AI. The law no. 31814 seeks to promote the use of artificial intelligence in favor of the economic and social development of the country.

On the other hand, it points out that although countries like Brazil and Chile are more advanced in terms of the use of AI, the latest Artificial Intelligence Index report, carried out by Stanford University, indicates that Peru is among the twenty countries with greater willingness to use artificial intelligence products and services. “This is very important (for Peru), but these resources still need to be capitalized,” he said.

Finally, Ccoyllo recommends to all young people that whatever career they choose, it is essential that they learn to program because in the future any profession will require, even basic programming.
