Delivery app drivers will carry out a national strike: when will it be and what are their demands?

Delivery app drivers in Peru will carry out a national strike to demand better quality to do their work. The measure arises in response to the precarious working conditions they face on a daily basis. With the support of the Union of Digital Platform Workers (Sintrapladi) and the General Confederation of Workers of Peru (CGTP), they seek to make visible their fight for fair rates, job security and the recognition of their rights.

The dominant companies in the market, such as Uber, rappi, OrdersNow and InDrive, are in the crosshairs of delivery workers, who demand better remuneration and other reforms in their favor. This national strike seeks to be a wake-up call to achieve significant change in the industry.

When will the national strike of delivery apps take place?

The date set for the national strike is Monday, March 11. The delivery drivers of the main delivery apps, such as Uber, Rappi, PedidosYa and InDrive, will cease their activities in demand of job improvements.

National strike: what are those distributing delivery apps asking for?

Among the main demands of delivery drivers is the establishment of fair rates per kilometer traveled. Currently, they report that they receive only S/0.80 per kilometer, a figure that they consider insufficient. In addition, they claim for the transfer of the cost of canceled orders to workers and the lack of medical insurance.

Paul Véliz, representative of Sintrapladi, expressed to La República his concern about the lack of fair rates. According to him, for routes of more than 4 km, the apps barely pay them S/2.80 per order. Despite the union’s attempts to establish a dialogue, there have been no approaches from the companies.

Delivery drivers seek to be recognized as independent workers, but with respected rights. They report being blocked by the apps if they refuse to make deliveries in dangerous areas or during late hours of the night.

How will the national strike affect home delivery services?

The national strike of delivery app drivers will have a significant impact on home delivery services. During the duration of the strike, a reduction in the availability of delivery drivers is expected, which could cause delays in deliveries. Customers may experience longer than usual wait times and a decrease in the variety of options available for delivery.

What are the working conditions of delivery app drivers?

Alejandra Dinegro, sociologist and director of the Peru Platforms Observatory, explains that, apart from the vehicular SOAT that is borne by the delivery drivers, they do not have any insurance.

Furthermore, 90% admit to not having read the terms and conditions when joining the platform, since their priority is to generate income, which implies that they are not informed about their employment situation. This means that 9 out of 10 workers feel vulnerable.

“They are not sure whether they are employees or collaborators. They lack benefits and access to basic facilities such as bathrooms or equipment. The only training they receive are videos on customer service, without any instructions on workplace safety. And that’s it,” he explained .
