The Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) reported that the extension of the term of the mining formalization process for three years contemplates (for the first time) the structural reforms to optimize and strengthen said process.
The Vice Minister of Mines, Jorge Chávez, assured that in that period the approval and implementation of the services and guidelines of the first policy for small and artisanal mining, which is under construction.
Máximo Franco, representative of the small miners’ associations and artisanal miners of Peru, stated that the expansion gives miners in the process of formalization the opportunity to adapt to current legislation, in order to carry out a sustainable and beneficial activity for their localities. He added that it is the first time that a government is interested in this sector for its formalization.

Minister Eduardo González Toro affirmed that his office will accompany the efforts of the miners to enter the formal economy and what will follow promoting a multisectoral national policy for small and artisanal mining. In addition, he welcomed that Congress has expanded the process with provisions that, for the first time, contemplate structural reforms.
Chávez also specified that it is necessary to complement national policy with a new law for this stratum of mining that provides definitive solutions to their problems. In addition, it indicated that this expansion does not establish new registrations or the reopening of the Comprehensive Mining Formalization Registry (Reinfo).
