Delegation of Ecuadorian businessmen will explore commercial opportunities in the Chancay Megaport

The Chancay Megaport has begun to attract international investments in Peru. Among those interested is Ecuadorwhose businessmen plan to visit the project to understand its operation and hold meetings with Peruvian colleagues and representatives of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MTC).

It has also been reported that February 26 to 28, a group of approximately twenty Ecuadorian businessmen linked to international logistics and foreign trade will visit Lima. For this reason, the Andina Agency interviewed Christian Chavezpresident of the Association of International Road Transporters (Andinatic) and leader of the Ecuadorian business delegation.

What does the Association of International Road Transporters (Andinatic) say about the Chancay Megaport?

Christian Chavezpresident of the Association of International Road Transporters (Andinatic), said: “We are aware that there will be a different logistical scenario from the operation of this port. From Ecuador, at a regional level, we also understand that it will have an important influence on both shipping and land transport.”

Chávez pointed out that Ecuador’s interest arises due to the need for Ecuadorian companies to increase land transportation and expand into emerging markets such as Asiain addition to carrying out maritime cabotage to various ports in the region.

“The impact it will have on logistics and foreign trade will be important, which is why we are interested in knowing it and seeing how operations will be generated from this port to other destinations,” he added.

What does the Ecuadorian representative say regarding the negotiations with Peru?

The union representative projected that trade between Peru and Ecuador could grow with the inauguration of this momentous mega-work, although there are still details to be defined that will be addressed in the meetings that will take place in our country.

“We still do not talk about amounts or how much the system that is being managed now will change. Our visit concerns this to find out what the port’s capacities are and propose possible investments. We are starting from the basis of the commercial exchange that exists with Peru and, with this, we foresee that there will be an increase, but we still do not have certainty of how much it would be,” he explained.

In addition, Chávez pointed out that Ecuador established an agreement with China that allows the export of a wide variety of products. Mining, crucial for the Ecuadorian economy, requires ports for the dispatch of its products, currently carried out from Puerto Bolívar in the province of El Oro (Ecuador). Likewise, Ecuador is an important exporter of fruits, flowers and shrimp. There is an expectation that the port of Chancay will become an export route for its products.

The leader of the Ecuadorian business delegation indicated that in the meeting with the Peruvian authorities they will seek to discuss measures that facilitate commercial exchange not only between both countries, but also with the rest of the nations in the region.

“We are going to meet with a couple of authorities in Peru in order to refine details on logistics issues (fuel, passage of Ecuadorian and Peruvian units), but I believe that, by talking and understanding that all this is for the benefit of all actors of the region, we can create the required synergy with the sole purpose of having trade facilitation for all and a benefit for all from a great work that is being built in Peru,” he added.
