The new Minister of Energy and Mines, Rómulo Mucho, announced that during his administration the unblocking of mining projects will be a priority. This was stated exclusively to the Institute of Mining Engineers of Peru (IIMP).
“Unblocking projects is my priority, that’s what they brought me in for,” he commented. According to the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem), of the 46 projects in the portfolio and valued at US$53 billion, only three are in the construction stage. These are San Gabriel, Santa María Expansion and Toromorocho Expansion (Phase II).
It is worth remembering that Jorge Soto Yen, general director of Mining at Minem, stated, at the IIMP’s Mining Thursday, that in the first quarter of this year, the Government hopes to authorize mining projects valued at at least US$3,000 million. Likewise, the official stated that during the rest of the year, the Executive will approve other initiatives for US$ 2.5 billion.
The head of Minem, Rómulo Mucho, also told the IIMP that during his administration the reinforcement of the Digital Single Window (VUD) will be on the agenda, in order to reduce permitting in mining projects.
To date, the Government has already launched the VUD with regard to mining exploration, which facilitates the monitoring of the progress of the key processes of a mining project and will soon allow the reduction of authorization approval times, which today take between one to three years, with shorter terms of six months.
In the morning, Mucho took over the reins of Minem. In an internal ceremony, he gave a brief speech in the auditorium before directors and staff of the institution.
