Valentine’s Day is a time of good income for different types of companies that offer romantic gifts, so, in 2024, it is expected that the average consumption amount per person oscillate between S/190 and S/250, according to the president of the Retail and Distribution Guild of the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL), Leslie Passalacqua.
This approximate amount of spending is higher than that of 2023, since in that year it was estimated between S/100 and S/150, due to the effect of social and political tensions. “We saw a complicated issue at the same time because the roads were closed, there were social conflicts, among others,” Passalacqua explained.
What do Peruvians spend on Valentine’s Day?
When it comes to popular products to give as gifts this year, Passalacqua noted that, unlike the last two years, when gifts were focused on health and sports, there is now a shift towards technology, although they are still present the classics, like stuffed animals or chocolates.
“Nowadays, there is an inclination towards gifting experiences and technology. Earlier, we used to associate technology gifts mainly with teenagers. However, even couples are opting for technology-related gifts as it facilitates various daily activities, both in the work as in everyday life,” explained the spokesperson.
Likewise, the purchase of experiences or entertainment (such as going to the movies, participating in activities in shopping centers, etc.), as well as spending in restaurants, also experience a significant increase during the Valentine’s period.
Along the same lines, Freddy Gamarra, manager of the Peruvian Association of Hotels, Restaurants and Related Services (Now Peru), indicated that the average expense during this period is estimated to be around S/350, although it may vary depending on the type. of drinks consumed, the type and location of the restaurant, as well as the target audience.
On the other hand, in the chocolate and accessories sector, José Cabanillas, in charge of the commercial part of Renzo Costa, a company that manufactures leather wallets and chocolates, anticipates a 6% increase in sales compared to the previous year. The most popular items for Valentine’s Day are purses, wallets, belts, backpacks and wallets, often sold together with a package of chocolates. These products have prices ranging between S/129 and S/349.
Valentine’s Day: online commerce and entrepreneurship
Online commerce is also boosted by the promotions of this day. Jaime Montenegro, who heads the Digital Transformation Center of the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL), anticipates a 10% increase in online sales during the month of love and friendship compared to February 2023.
On the other hand, in the case of smaller businesses, the florists at the Piedra Liza Flower Market, located in the Rímac district, told La República that the demand for purchasing arrangements is great and that the average purchase of each Peruvian is 40 soles.
