Rómulo Mucho Mamani is the new head of the Ministry of Energy and Mines

Rómulo Mucho Mamani has been appointed as the new head of the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem). The changes in several portfolios had already been rumored in recent weeks, and this Tuesday, February 13, President Dina Boluarte has decided to make them concrete. In this way, Óscar Vera Gargurevich leaves the leadership of Minem, after 1 year and 2 months.

Mucho was a congressman of the Republic in 2000 and vice minister of Mines in 2006, during the Government of Alejandro Toledo. In addition, for two years he was president of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Mining Engineers of Peru. For 17 years he served as general manager of the Peruvian company Pevoex Contratistas, dedicated to providing services in explosives technology, rock drilling and blasting, to companies in the mining and construction sector.

Just a month ago, Mucho told local media that mining is the engine of economic growth, but that there was no minister in this portfolio who knows about the subject. For this reason, it was also difficult for 2024 to be the year of mining investments as the president of the Council of Ministers, Alberto Otárola, had announced.

“Mining investments are not going to come because the premier announces them, but because of concrete events. A shock of confidence is needed. But there is no such shock (because) the institutionality that is not recovered, because of the instability and because what is said It’s not done,” he said.
