José Arista was sworn in as the new head of the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), replacing Alex Contreras Miranda.

After just over a year in office, Contreras Miranda was removed from the Jirón Junín colossus, a month after assuring La República that he was going to resign due to “the lack of transparency in some decisions.”

However, hours after announcing his decision, he assured that at no time did he want to leave the MEF.

Even so, the head of state appointed José Arista as the new person in charge of economic policy, for a year in which it is expected to emerge from the recession after having had the worst result in more than 20 years in 2023 (not counting the pandemic).

Who is José Arista?

The new Minister of Economy and Finance, José Arista Arbildo, previously held the MEF during the de facto government of Manuel Merino.

Furthermore, in 2016 he was the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation of PPK. (Minagri, at that time).

An economist by profession, Arista was also Vice Minister of Finance between 2006 and 2010, as well as director of the Banco de la Nación and official of the Ministry of Education.
