Imports of fans and air conditioners doubled in 2023

The high temperatures in the country, caused by the impact of El Niño, caused imports of ventilation and air conditioning equipment to double at the end of 2023 compared to the previous year, since more than 350,000 units of these products entered the Peruvian market, according to the Foreign Trade Research and Development Institute of the Lima Chamber of Commerce (Idexcam).

Imports of air conditioning equipment reported a value of US$7.9 million in 2023 after the acquisition of 37,055 units. This imported volume represented an increase of 97.7%, compared to the year 2022, according to Idexcam statistics.

“This positive trend was also observed in November and December 2023, where imports of this equipment registered an average increase of 150% (sic),” explained Óscar Quiñones, head of Idexcam.

In 2023, China was the main supplier of air conditioners, with 32,000 units purchased valued at US$6.9 million, registering an increase in imported volume of 104.7% compared to 2022.

Imports of fans grew by 140%

Regarding fans, these were the equipment with the highest volume purchased with almost 320,000 units, valued at US$7.4 million, which represents a growth in units of 140% in 2023.

Peru’s main ventilator supplier country is China with 256,661 units; The United States follows far behind with 13,000 ventilators.

Likewise, in November and December 2023, imported units reported a significant dynamism of 139% and 401%, respectively, which highlights the need to supply the Peruvian market.

The offer is diversified to combat the heat

Another device that is registering an increase in demand is air coolers or also known as air conditioners, portable ventilation equipment that is used in homes and offices, and is characterized by consuming little energy.

In 2023, imports of these products totaled more than 25,000 units, which represents a growth of 64.9% compared to the previous year. The largest imported volume comes from China with 24,000 units, of which an increase of 68.9% is reported.

Given these reports, Idexcam does not rule out an increase in imports of ventilation equipment for the first quarter, given that the sensation of heat will be higher in the following months.

However, the dynamism of these imports could decrease due to the fact that China, our main supplier, will register delays in its exports due to the celebrations for the Chinese New Year (Year of the Dragon) that begins on February 10.
