Midagri activates agricultural insurance to address the impacts of natural phenomena such as El Niño

The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) has made catastrophic agricultural insurance (SAC) available, a protection measure for small producers against various risks, such as the phenomenon The boy.

This is free insurance financed 100% by the State, with resources from the Rural Guarantee Fund and Agricultural Insurance (Fogasa).

The SAC provides financial compensation to farmers, especially those who are poorer and more vulnerable, with the aim of increasing their resilience to the negative impacts of disasters. This will allow them to carry out replanting and recover their productive capacity.

How much is the compensation?

Compensation is established uniquely, regardless of the type of crop or the phenological stage in which it is found at the time of suffering the damage or loss.

For the 2023-2024 agricultural campaign, The amount of compensation is S/800 per hectare for crops prioritized by the DRA/GRA, and S/400 per hectare for non-prioritized crops. The maximum coverage is limited to 10 hectares per beneficiary.

What events does this insurance protect against?

The SAC protects against the occurrence of the following natural events and those associated with climate change:

  • High temperatures
  • Glide
  • Diseases
  • Volcanic eruption
  • Lack of land to harvest
  • Hail
  • Frost
  • Avalanche
  • Fire
  • Flood
  • Excessive or untimely rain
  • Snow
  • Pests and predators
  • Drought
  • Drought for irrigated crops
  • Earthquake
  • Plugging or non-birth
  • Strong wind
  • Environmental pollution

How to activate the insurance?

After the incident occurs, the producer must notify the Agrarian Agency or Office, either in person or by telephone. The Agrarian Agency informs the insurance company of the occurrence of the incident, via email, within 7 days of the incident occurring.

The insurance company appoints an expert to evaluate the damage caused to the insured crop in the field, within the following 15 days, counted from the date on which the loss notice was received. As a result of this visit, the expert will present a report.

If the report indicates that the loss is compensable, The insurance company will coordinate with the Regional Agrarian Directorate (DRA) the registration of farmers, within 20 days following the date indicated in the minutes.

To proceed with the payment of compensation, the insurance company opens bank accounts and pays the agricultural producer S/800 for each insured hectare of the insured crop, within the following 15 days. The payment is proportional to the planted area indicated by each farmer, in the list of compensated producers.
