Retirees will go on hunger strike to demand an increase in pensions

President Dina Boluarte promised to raise the basic pension by S/100 but so far she has not delivered, and its materialization even depends on the pension reform proposal they sent to Congress.

Given this silence, the National Center of Retirees and Pensioners of Peru (Cenajupe) will carry out a hunger strike so that the Executive keeps its word.

“There is a mandate from the Constitutional Court that gives the Executive and Legislative 3 years to progressively increase pensions, but there is nothing to date,” said Óscar Alarcón, general secretary of Cenajupe.

In an interview with La República, he maintained that there are several organizations that will support this hunger strike since all diplomatic channels with Boluarte have been exhausted. The next meeting will be on February 8 and they will define the date of the demonstrations.

For example, the CGTP will also protest to urge the increase of the minimum living wage in favor of “justice and a better quality of life.”

“It gives the impression of blackmail that they want to tie the increase of S/100 to the approval of the pension reform (of the Executive),” He commented, but not before mentioning that the average of S/600 is not enough to cover the increase in the cost of the basic basket, even more so for older adults.

Alarcón recalled that the common feeling of retirees is to equate the minimum pension with the minimum salary (S/1,025) and this proposal is not far-fetched since “no pensioner should earn less than the RMV.”
