Despite the risks, Mincetur will insist on increasing the daily capacity at Machu Picchu

The Government of Dina Boluarte is clear that the capacity in Machu Picchu must be increased this year despite the fact that UNESCO asks not to do so. Through the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Juan Carlos Mathewspointed out at the Davos World Forum that shifts will be created to visit the Inca citadel according to demand.

Mathews told the EFE Agency that the increase in the flow of visitors will be “something progressive,” but it will materialize in the current even though UNESCO—which in the 1980s declared it a world heritage site— set a limit of 4,044 tourists per day and was close to declaring it in danger due to the excessive load of tourists.

“If one reviews the document, there are 4,044 simultaneous (travelers), which opens the possibility of opening shifts, which is an option that we are considering,” the minister said.

Another option will be “dynamic capacity”, which will not involve bringing in 5,000 or 6,000 tourists at once – according to Mathews – but rather doing so based on seasonality, since there are months when visit rates are higher.

Defends virtual sales

After the tension generated by the implementation of an online sales system for visits to Machu Picchu, the official assured that it is an important step, since it will facilitate entry for foreigners despite the distance, and thus “it will not reach see if you can get access in the queue” to our Wonder of the World.

“On the contrary, We are showing them that with virtual sales we are going to have a greater influx and therefore greater opportunity for growth in the region,” he pointed out.

Key years for incoming tourism

The cornerstones in the recovery of incoming tourism in Peru will be the meetings of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC 2024), as well as the World Tourism Forum in 2025 and the World Mining Congress in 2026.

For example, from Aeropuertos del Sur they told this newspaper that from February APEC delegations will begin to arrive for meetings in Arequipa, while Ayacucho is getting ready to host almost 3,000 athletes who will participate in the Bolivarian Games 2024. These events will foster an auspicious scenario and raise the standard of the local airport industry, in addition to positively impacting adjacent economic activities.

Receptive tourism far from recovering

In 2023, only 2.5 million foreign tourists entered the country, which is still far from the 4.4 million before the pandemic.

Minister Juan Carlos Mathews estimates that 3.2 million foreigners will register this year and 3.9 million in 2025. Only by 2026 would what was seen in 2019 be equal.
