Tottus ice cream: why will it be withdrawn from the Peruvian market?

The Tottus ice cream will be withdrawn from the market because the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Intellectual Property (Indecopi) ordered to cease its distribution and commercialization. The vanilla, lucuma and tricolor strawberry flavored ice creams of this brand exceeded the legal limit of Trans fat they can contain.

Indecopi reported that 45 food products were analyzed in the laboratory. They identified that the 511 gram Tottus ice cream contains trans fats “of technological origin” above what is allowed. For this reason, Indecopi’s Consumer Protection Commission issued a precautionary measure to stop its sale to the public.

Manufacturers and marketers of this product will face the Indecopi administrative sanctioning proceduresthe institution reported in a statement. The suppliers would have breached the Consumer Protection and Defense Code. According to the regulatory framework, health authorities can only grant authorization to products that contain up to 2 grams of trans fatty acids per 100 grams or 100 milliliters of fat.

Indecopi: Panettone Tottus, Bell’s and Cheese Tris out of the market

Indecopi’s analysis found that 5 of 45 products observed exceeded the limit for trans fat. These are the traditional recipe Tottus panettone of 900 grams, Marbled bimbolete of 165 grams (Bimbo), Panettone with raisins and candied fruits of 850 grams (Bells) and 39 gram Cheese Tris (Frito Lay).

Snack América Latina SRL, the company in charge of Cheese Tris, stated that they comply with current labeling and production parameters. Peruvian supermarkets, for their part, stated that Bells panettone “technically” do not contain trans fatTherefore, they asked Indecopi to review the methodology they applied.

Indecopi stressed that the Consumer Protection and Defense Code establishes that “suppliers are responsible for the suitability and quality of products and services offered ”.
