Gonzalo Castro de la Mata, Manager of External Affairs of PluspetrolHe argued that Camisea should be taken as an example of economic growth in accordance with the environmental needs that the world requires today.
During your participation in the III Amazon Business Congress The urgent challenge of sustainable and inclusive development of the Peruvian Amazon, The ecologist stressed that the Camisea experience should be taken as a model for the new tax scheme that is being debated in Parliament.
“In the context of what is being talked about in Congress, about the new economic opportunities that exist, Camisea is an important piece to achieve the sustainable development of our Amazon,” he said.
In this sense, he remarked that, since it began operations in 2004, the gas field has left more than 40 billion dollars between royalties and taxes. In addition, Peru has stopped emitting 80 million tons of CO2 and generated savings of more than 100 billion dollars in the economy due to the price of natural gas.
“The fundamental principle to conserve the Amazon ecosystem is to maintain the forest cover, that is, any form of land use that maintains the forest is a compatible form of development,” affirmed the Pluspetrol representative.
In addition, Castro de la Mata highlighted that Camisea has preserved biodiversity in all the blocks where it operates. The main problem is deforestation for the construction of roads, through “forms of occupation that are not compatible”.
“In the case of Peru, we have introduced a practice that is an example worldwide. The Camisea model uses the model of ‘hydrocarbons without roads‘, in English offshore-inland. Our Amazon is protected and wealth is generated because all operations are carried out remotely by helicopter or across the river, without building roads, “he said.
“The macroeconomic impact has been enormous. Camisea is calculated to add to GDP between 1% and 2% per year, it is a fundamental pillar of the country during the last 15 years ”, he added.
