Peru will have 16 national holidays in 2024

In the last three years, four new national holidays have been approved by the Congress of the Republic, of which two were enacted in 2023. Given this, Peru will have 16 holidays in 2024, added to the 30 days of vacations that formal workers have, which makes a total of 46 days off with the right to pay.

This way, Peru is the country with the most paid days off compared to the countries in the OECD and the Pacific Alliance. Cristina Oviedo, partner at Payet, Rey, Cauvi, Pérez Abogados, points out that although holidays can boost the economy, specifically with domestic tourism, activities not linked to this area would be affected, since production would be reduced. in these dates.

The expert specified that these four national holidays, added in the last three years, will appear on the 2024 calendar. These are the following:

  • July 23: Peruvian Air Force Day
  • June 7: Battle of Arica and Flag Day
  • August 6: Battle of Junín
  • December 9: Battle of Ayacucho.

How much do I get paid if I work on a holiday?

However, Oviedo specifies that, if the staff works on these dates, the company must pay them up to three times for the service provided on that day. However, the employer could also choose to grant you a compensatory day for working on a holiday.

“If this compensation is not granted, double payment will be made for the work performed plus the payment for the regular holiday, whether you will receive it whether you work or not. That is, for that day you would receive three daily payments“says the expert.

As an example, if the worker receives a salary of S/50 per day worked, if he provides services on a holiday, the payment he would receive will be S/150. “It is S/50 that corresponds to the holiday, which is paid whether you work or not, and S/50 for the work performed and S/50 more for the surcharge for that work performed,” specified the labor activist.
