The Minister of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, Jennifer Contreras, reported that in March 2024 it will be defined which nation will be in charge, under the Government to Government (G2G) modality, of completing the works of the third stage of Chavimochic, in La Libertad.
In a press conference organized to learn about the progress in prevention against El Niño, Contreras stated that his portfolio will seek to unblock important irrigation works, such as Chinecas and Majes, in order to reactivate the sector and achieve 3% growth in the next exercise.
“Chavimochic’s contract must be signed no later than the first week of March, if not in February,” he said.
The only two countries left in the race are the Netherlands and Canada. Previously, the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) had warned that, if bidders were not obtained by the end of the last quarter of 2023, Chavimochic III would be awarded directly in February.
“At this time, the technical team is evaluating both initiatives,” reported the head of Midagri, regarding the technical and economic characteristics of both proposals.
Chavimochic III is an irrigation project that will allow cultivation from 54,000 hectares to 144,000 hectares in the north of the country. However, there is still no clarity regarding the awarding of the Canal Madre, but progress will be reviewed with the Regional Government next week.
