The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) established sanitary measures aimed at preventing and controlling the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza at the national level, which must be implemented as of January 1, 2024.
Through ministerial resolution No. D000017-2023-MIDAGRI-SENASA-DSA, the Peruvian Government approved the “Guidelines for vaccination against influenza type A subtype H5” and the “Guidelines for health certification for the movement of birds and their products”.
“In the event of non-compliance with sanitary measures, the Executive Directorates of the National Agrarian Health Service may order the seizure and destruction of birds and their products, as well as the adoption of administrative measures as appropriate,” the document warns.
Why are these measures applied? Midagri points out that, from epidemiological week 46 of 2022 to epidemiological week 46 of 2023, “cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza have progressively decreased.”
In this sense, and in order to maintain this trend, it is necessary to prevent and control its spread by establishing sanitary measures including the population of fattening ducks considering their participation in the epidemiology of the disease.
“The same that must be executed from January 1, 2024, once the health emergency declared through Headquarters Resolution-0180-2022-MIDAGRI-SENASA has concluded, expanded with Headquarters Resolution-0028-2023-MIDAGRI-SENASA” , declares the resolution.
