The Ministry of Production (Produce) exceptionally extended the fishing season for river shrimp in public water bodies on the western slope of the Andes.
Through ministerial resolution No. 00430-2023-PRODUCE, the capture of the Cryphiops caementarius in public water bodies on the western slope of the Andes is extended until January 2, 2024.
“The extraction, processing, storage, marketing, transportation and use of the aforementioned resource is prohibited from 00:00 on January 3 until March 31, 2024,” the document states.
Usually, the beginning and end of the free fishing periods for river shrimp occur in the period between April 1 and December 19 of each year. Therefore, the ban occurs between December 20 of each year and March 31 of the following year.
However, this year Produce found “indications about a slight change in the maturation pattern of shrimp in the Majes-CamanĂ¡ River”, estimating the occurrence of the same in other rivers in nearby regional areas.
“It is inferred that the period of maximum reproductive activity of the resource will occur from January 2024,” says the Imarpe report.
Therefore, it is recommended to “consider until the first week of January 2024 the extension of the beginning of the period of the reproductive ban on river shrimp, which prohibits the extraction of the resource during its period of maximum reproductive activity; suggesting that the end date be maintained ( March 31)”, he points out.
