A few days to celebrate Christmas and the New Year 2022, the price per kilogram of Turkey in the markets it has been generating a lot of uncertainty. In recent days, the cost per kilo of the preferred bird in Peruvian tables for these times increased to an average of S / 16, compared to 2020, year in which it reached an amount of S / 15.
In this regard, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), Christian Garay, in dialogue with La República explained that the rise in the price per kilogram of turkey will depend considerably on demand because the value of the breeding has increased.
“This year 2021, the production costs of raising a turkey on a farm have increased. So somehow this can condition the final value, but on the other hand supply grew by 38% and may in some way contain this price rise, depending very much on the demand variable ”, Garay stated.
However, it is necessary to clarify that the values that have been circulating in the markets of metropolitan Lima they are not the real prices, because the production of these birds will be placed in the markets for the third week of December.
“The prices that are currently being disseminated are not the final marketing prices because these are defined at the time of placing the large mass of turkey production in the markets, which will happen in the third week of December. What is being done now is the order and the price is speculating a bit ”added the official.
Growth of local turkey production
Local production will offer 1,652,000 units of turkeys to meet the demand of Peruvian families in the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays 2022, according to Midagri.
In that sense, the supply of turkeys will be higher by 38.3% compared to what was registered in the 2020 campaign, despite the impacts generated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Recommendation for buying turkey at parties
The Midagri spokesperson points out that an alternative to save a little money in these end-year celebrations can be to buy frozen turkey, since currently in the supermarkets of the capital it is at a price of S/ 11,50 a S/14,40 the kilogram.
