The Single Union of Fishermen of New Vessels of Peru (Supnep) and the Single Union of Motorists, Officers and Fishermen of Peru (Sumopp) They have announced a sit-in this Monday, December 18 from 9:00 am in front of the premises of the Institute of the Sea of Peru (Imarpe) and in front of the Ministry of Production (Produces) to demand that the current fishing season ends. Among the reasons, they warn that there is a high incidence of juvenile anchovies that would be preyed upon indiscriminately, which would affect the conservation of the resource.
“We are fishermen and not predators,” indicate the spokespersons for the unions. In addition, they also demand that the authorities prioritize the preservation of the sustainability of the anchovy biomass of the north-central zone for future seasons, which could also be affected by the El Niño Phenomenon.

As recalled, during the exploratory fishing, carried out in August, Imarpe reported more than 50% concentration of juvenile anchovies, and up to 70% of the resource with sizes smaller than those allowed for capture (12 cm). However, on October 26, Produce authorized the second industrial fishing season, with a quota of 1.6 million metric tons (MT).
“From the first day of exploration (until now) there has been a high incidence of juvenile fishing, in percentages of 60% to 65%; in some areas it has reached up to 75%,” Lorenzo Vásquez Contreras, general secretary of the Fishermen’s Union of Chimbote and Annexes, previously stated to La República.
