Petroperú will have its first two directors chosen by meritocratic competition in 2024

Petróleos del Perú SA – Petroperú confirmed this Thursday, December 14, the “irrevocable” resignation of its directors José Antonio Olivares Canchari and Brigitt Bruna Bencich Aguilar.

Through a high-profile event before the Securities Market Superintendency (SMV), the state oil company also confirmed the appointment of the new general manager, engineer Herbert Manuel Goñas Aguilar.

The president of the Petroperú board of directors, Pedro Chira Fernández, had advanced this week to The Republic that the corporate governance agreements for the restructuring of the company were successfully adopted.

For this reason, the replacements for Olivares Canchari and Bencich Aguilar will be the first in this new stage for the company who will be chosen by competition “in an expected period of between two and three months,” according to Chira Fernández, and in compliance with DU 023 -2022.

“We have already made progress in terms of governance in improving how to choose the board of directors. Now, it will be with a headhunter and the job profiles that are needed are already in place. The competition will be totally independent and the directors will no longer be chosen by Minem and MEF, as it was before. We will go out to the market to look for the best professionals,” highlighted Chira Fernández.

“Another important change is that two of the six directors will be women,” added the head of the state oil company.

Petroperú’s objective is to clean up the company for its first public offering of shares around 2025. The stake it plans to give up ranges between 20% and 30%.

In the case of general management, Goñas Aguilar replaces Gaspar Díaz Tello, who as of January 3, 2024 will return to the position of corporate manager of the Talara Refinery, as manager.
