BCRP launches new S/200 bill with the image of the painter Tilsa Tsuchiya Castillo

Starting December 15, the Central Reserve Bank of Peru will put into circulation the new S/200 bill with the image of the painter Tilsa Tsuchiya Castillo, a prominent Peruvian artist of the 20th century. The badge, in addition to the modern design, provides renewed security elements.

The new bill will circulate simultaneously with the current S/200 bills. The design has been developed by the prestigious English company De La Rue International Limited, which won the design competition organized by the BCRP in which the main banknote printers in the world participated.

The banknotes of the new family are characterized by having renewed security elements that are easy to recognize by the public. Its theme is focused on characters from the 20th century who have had a notable influence on art, literature, history and science.

The theme of biodiversity is also highlighted, including motifs of our flora and fauna, for which we had the support of the Ministry of the Environment (Minam).

In this way, the new family of banknotes issued by the BCRP is complete:

  • S/10: Chabuca Granda, the vicuña and the Flor de Amancaes (aired in July 2021).
  • S/20: José María Arguedas, the condor and the Flor de la Cantuta (broadcast in July 2022).
  • S/50: María Rostworowski, the jaguar and Puya Raimondi (aired in July 2022).
  • S/100: Pedro Paulet, the Spatula-tailed Hummingbird and the orchid Phragmipedium kovachii (issued in July 2021).
  • S/200: Tilsa Tsuchiya, the Cock of the Rocks and the Beautiful Abanquina Flower (aired December 2023).

New S/200 bill: Who was Tilsa Tsuchiya?

The predominant color of the S/200 bill is lavender, it is printed on cotton and has the same dimensions as the current bills.

The image of our painter and engraver Tilsa Tsuchiya Castillo (Supe, Chancay 1928 – Lima, 1984) is shown, an outstanding figure in the field of arts, for her unique style outside of any artistic movement.

“His work exposed a creative syncretism of timeless characters and atmospheres converted into elements of fantasy and narrative incorporating aspects of indigenous imagery and mythology fused with European influences,” says the issuing entity.

Among the vast pictorial work of Tilsa Tsuchiya, “Tristan and Isolde”, “The Myth of the Red Warrior”, “Pelican”, “Woman and Monkey”, among many others, stand out.

New S/200 bill: security elements, according to BCRP

On the left side of the S/200 bill, in the area free of prints, is the watermark that shows Tilsa Tsuchiya’s face and the denomination in numbers within a triangle.

In addition, there is the protruding green security thread that shows moving figures when the bill is turned slightly back and forth.

In the lower right corner is a geometric design printed with color-changing ink. When you rotate the bill, this design changes from gold to green, showing motion effects.

On the right side of the bill, below the value in numbers, is the hidden number, which corresponds to the denomination 200, which can be seen when placing the bill tangentially towards a light source.

The obverse has relief impressions perceptible to the touch, which are mainly located in the legend BANCO CENTRAL DE RESERVA DEL PERÚ, the character, the denomination in numbers and letters and the registration for the blind located on the left side edge.

The reverse of the bill is designed in vertical format, and shows images of the Cock of the Rock and the Flor Bella Abanquina. You can also see the Coat of Arms and the denomination in numbers and letters in two colors. The new banknotes also incorporate security elements recognizable by equipment that identifies and processes cash.
