The Central Market vendorslocated in the Center of Lima, sell special turkeys known as ‘megaturkeys’, which weigh more than 20 kilos. These giant birds represent an ideal option for large families who want to enjoy this type of meat during their Christmas dinner.

Compared to conventional turkeys, which usually weigh between 8 and 10 kilos, ‘megaturkeys’ are almost double the size. To illustrate its dimensions, it is mentioned that the neck of birds has the thickness equivalent to the arm of an adult man.

A saleswoman interviewed by RPP described turkeys as the “daddies of poults” and called them “sandwich turkeys,” because they are commonly purchased by restaurant owners and large families.

How much is a kilo of ‘megaturkey’?

The kilo of this turkey varies in two types. The one on offer is 16 soles, while the kilo of free-range turkey reaches 19 soles. Prices can rise as Christmas Eve approaches, so sellers recommend separating your bird as soon as possible.

“I have a lot of clients who have separated, my list is already like 80 people. They don’t feel it that way. We have opted for these so that they can carry their turkey,” said a merchant.

The price of a turkey varies depending on its size and starts at approximately 90 soles. However, in the Central Market, they are not limited only to the sale of turkeys; They offer various alternatives for Christmas dinner, such as suckling pig, guinea pig and even rabbit.

How much is turkey in other markets?

Caquetá Market

In this market, there is a poultry store called San Fernando that sells frozen turkeys for S/16.50. In the surrounding area, specifically on June 10 Avenue, in the live animals section, live turkey is sold. For S/7, buyers have the option for sellers to sacrifice it on the spot. The price per kilo is S/16 for black turkey and S/12.50 for white.

Isamisa Poultry

On Los Ángeles Avenue, in the Ate district, the wholesale price of turkey is S/8 from 1,500 turkeys, and retail sales are made at S/12 per kilo.
