The president of the Association of Exporters (ADEX), Julio Pérez Alván, estimated that Pisco shipments in 2023 would close at US$10,500,000, an increase of 0.2% in relation to 2022.
During his speech at the talk “Pisco: knowing more about our flagship drink: Challenges and projections”, organized by the union’s Pisco Committee, the head of Adex pointed out that between January and October of this year shipments amounted to US$7 million 892,000.
“Although we have a complicated external and internal situation, we are confident of achieving a higher rate; part of that responsibility falls in the hands of the public and private sectors,” Alván highlighted.
Despite the difficult context, the performance of the flagship drink in recent years “fills Peruvians with pride, as it has transcended borders and reached countries such as the United States, Spain, the Netherlands, Japan, Belgium, France and the United Kingdom. Kingdom”, gaining a place on the international cocktail scene.
“This achievement is the result of the joint work of the producing families, exporters and the OCEX (Commercial Offices Abroad), which make Pisco known in every corner of the world, highlighting its quality and versatility. A great example are the international competitions that guarantee its quality, granting recognition and medals with important scores at the level of great distillates,” stated Alván.
Adex: pisco must reach Asia and Oceania
Pisco reaches important markets such as the US and others in Europe. However, there is still a pending agenda in which progress must be made in order to continue diversifying its entry to other destinations.
“Let’s aim for new markets in Asia and Oceania,” said the president of the export union.
In this sense, Alván requested greater support from the OCEX in identifying more buyers and considered that the combination of more pisco grapes, a greater volume of pisco and more buyers will influence its success, with the consequent generation of more jobs. and the emergence of more development poles in southern Peru.
Although it is a drink with great potential, he continued, there is still much to do. ADEX requested the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) to carry out a census to find out how many areas of pisco grape cultivation there are and thus project a better future, which offers ample possibilities for the national drink.
“Today it is produced in Ica (Ica Valley), Arequipa (Tambo Valley), Moquegua (Locumba Valley) and Tacna (Sama Valley). These regions are characterized by having unique climatic and geographical conditions that influence the characteristics and flavors of the Pisco produced in each area,” he noted.
Pisco: protect the designation of origin
Likewise, Adex highlighted the need to protect the Denomination of Origin (DO), which is the main differential value of pisco, and fight against its falsification, since the priority must be to preserve its authenticity. Therefore, public-private work will be crucial in order to guarantee its positioning in the world.
Finally, Alván renewed the union’s commitment, through its Pisco Committee, to continue coordinating with entities that guarantee the quality of the national drink and to be competitive in an increasingly demanding international market, supporting the development of production chains and the internationalization of their companies.
