Panettone exports grew 24% as of October and reached 20 countries

Exports of Panettone totaled US $ 5.4 million in the January-October 2021 period, which represented an increase of 24% compared to the same period in 2020 (US $ 4.4 million), according to information from the Foreign Trade Center (CCEX) of the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL).

In this way, the volume sold abroad of wholesale panettone totaled 1,650 tons, and achieved an advance of 32% in relation to 2020. According to statistics, these shipments had a greater dynamism in the months of September and October, which accounted for 57% of exports.

This dynamism is due to a greater increase in Peruvian communities abroad that, despite the distance, seek to consume traditional products at Christmas such as panetón.

Main markets

The CCEX added that, as of October 2021, this product reached 20 countries, among which the United States, Chile and Japan stand out, which accumulated 90% of the total exported.

In the case of U.S, the dispatches totaled US $ 2.5 million, and reported an advance of 23% and a participation of 46%. Meanwhile, shipments to Chile exceeded US $ 2.1 million, 74% more than the previous year, and registered a participation of 40%, while exports to Japan totaled US $ 239,145 (+ 33%).

Likewise, there are other markets to which it was exported in smaller amounts, but which registered significant growth, such as Belgium (+156%), Netherlands (+34%), Canada (+103%), Puerto Rico (+ 14%); among others.

Panettone Tottus: Indecopi orders withdrawal

Hypermarkets Tottus reported that the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Intellectual Property (Indecopi) ordered the cessation of the commercialization of the 900 gram Panettone Tottus, because it would contain trans fats above the limits allowed by the standard.

The company affirmed that the Panettone Tottus does not violate this rule. Despite this, they indicated that they will abide by the product’s sales restriction and that they will file pertinent legal remedies to reverse the effects ordered by the Indecopi resolution.
