The mayor of Guayaquil, Aquiles Alvarez, announced that he will meet next Wednesday with DP World, the operator of the Port of Posorja, to address the scenario that the road to the coast will face when more container traffic is supported in 2024.

The shipping company Maerks, which moves a significant amount in the port of Contecon, announced to its clients that from next year it will dock at Posorja, and no longer in Guayaquil.

Some estimate that between 45% and 50% of the port’s cargo volume is moved by Maerks, equivalent to more than 300,000 teus (a 20-foot container unit).

The road to the coast will enable more cargo traffic due to the transfer of one of the largest shipping companies from Guayaquil to Posorje

Alvarez said they called DP World to seek solutions. “It’s nice that they have this contract now, but they’re complicating the collapsed Perimeter and complicating the road to the coast, which is already collapsing and will collapse even more.”

The mayor expressed his concern about this situation and reminded that yesterday there was a traffic accident on the El Triunfo road involving a trailer transporting a container of this freight forwarder, in which seven people died and eleven were injured.

He said they hope DP World will help with a plan to find a solution. “They apparently have a plan that they want to show on Wednesday,” Alvarez said.
