The Minister of Telecommunications, César Martín, announced this Monday, December 4, that he met with the executives of Claro and Movistar, as he said, to promote the progress of the contract renegotiation process.

According to Martin, the meeting was attended by the CEO of Claro, Alfredo Escobar, and the president of Telefónica Movistar Ecuador, Luis Benatuil. “Today I met with the managers of the telephone operators Claro and Movistar, in order to promote the progress of the process of renegotiation of the advanced mobile service, following the guidelines of the President of the Republic, Daniel Noboa,” the minister wrote on his X account (previously Twitter).

Arcotel extends the contract with Telefónica Movistar that expired on November 30

Contracts with telephone operators were supposed to expire this year, but the government of former president Guillermo Lasso announced an extension with two telephone operators.

The contract with Clara expired on August 26, but a six-month extension was signed, which took effect on August 27. While Movistar’s contract expired on November 30, the extension was signed on November 21, according to the Agency for Regulation and Control of Telecommunications (Arcotel).

The state contract with the telephone company Claro has been extended for another six months

The renegotiation of the agreements has been put on hold. Last May, Arcotel reported that the renegotiations were suspended because of the ongoing evaluation of the radio spectrum, which must be carried out by the entity together with the International Telecommunication Union.
