The mining sector generated 240,788 jobs during October 2021. The figure represents an increase of 26.7% compared to the 189,972 jobs registered the same month last year, detailed the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) in the last edition of the Mining Statistical Bulletin (BEM).
Thus, between January and October, mining achieved an average employment rate of 223,817 workers, 26% more than in the same period in 2020 when the figure reached the average of 177,692 employees. The average result obtained in the tenth month of the year is the highest in the last decade, according to Minem.
However, the month-on-month result represents a -1% month-on-month decline.
Finally, during this period, the jobs generated by contractors (mining contractors and related companies) represented 73.3% of total mining employment, which meant a year-on-year increase of 37.5%. Along the same lines, the employment generated by the companies (mining companies) represented 26.7% of the total participation, which represented an increase of 4.4% compared to 2020.
Mining employment by region
At the regional level, Áncash ranks first with a total of 32,116 direct jobs in mining that represent 13.3% of the national total. They are followed by Arequipa with 30,207 jobs (12.5%) and Moquegua with 27,779 workers (11.5%).
In this regard, the BEM specifies that in the Arequipa and Moquegua regions, the highest registered employment corresponds to the companies Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde SAA and Anglo American Quellaveco SA, respectively.
