President Dina Boluarte and Alex Contreras, head of the MEF, announced on Friday, August 25, an increase in the minimum pension that would benefit more than 600,000 retirees from the Pension Normalization Office (ONP), covered under Legislative Decree 19990. Despite the intentions of the Minister of Economy for this increase to be implemented starting in 2024, there is still no start date for the official payment.
This proposal is part of the Executive’s pension system reform project, which seeks to establish a minimum pension of S/600 for members of the public and private system (ONP and AFP), and in this way, help them alleviate the financial difficulties they are going through due to the impacts of the economic recession and the increase in the amount of the basic family basket.
Who are the beneficiaries of the pension increase for ONP retirees?
More than 600,000 ONP pensioners, covered under Law 19990, will benefit from an increase in their pensions. In addition, pensioners of the Fishing Regime and those who belonged to the Fisherman’s Fund, will be benefited for the first time with a minimum pension of S/360. The increase and implementation of this service has already been approved by Supreme Decree No. 187-2023-EF, for the benefit of more than 2,500 older adults, whose pension was on average S/150.
