The Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP) has launched several collectible coins to commemorate a series of events, and these reach high values. However, ancient coins that are in circulation can also achieve high prices from collectors.

Learn in this note what the indicators are to recognize if these ancient coins have any value for collectors and, thus, you can take them to an appraiser, if necessary.

How do you know if an old coin has value for collectors?

An old coin can reach higher values than the nominal one you have. Therefore, recognize what are the factors that can determine it:

  • Check the year of minting: this factor is important to determine its age, it is key for numismatic collectors.
  • Check the authenticity of the coin: you must verify that the top layer of the coin is not made of any fraudulent metal.
  • Check the condition of the coin: the more careful it is, the more value it will have.

What is the value of the 5 cent coin among collectors?

According to the official website of Free marketthe 5 cent coin currently has two prices:

  • 0.05 coin (year 2014): S/100
  • 0.05 coin with Chávez’s signature (year 1992): S/50
  • 0.05 coin (year 2011): S/20
