By the end of 2023, the port terminal in Guayaquil (TPG) plans to mobilize more than 500,000 containers, which would position it as the leader in cargo traffic in the ports of Ecuador for the fifth year in a row, according to the entity’s announcement. The projection for 2022 was 502,000 containers.

To make these projections, they are based on the results obtained, according to TPG General Manager Luisenrique Navas, 421,164 containers, 20 and 40 feet, were mobilized from January to October, compared to 410,867 of the same size in 2022.

According to TPG data, about 90 percent of foreign trade in the country is carried out by sea, and of that percentage, about 40 percent through this terminal.

Navas commented that Ecuador’s top-selling products were bananas, shrimp, wood, cocoa, canned tuna and mining concentrate, representing 82 percent of exports. While the main destinations were the countries of Asia, Latin America and Europe.

TPG, according to the press release, served 317 vessels of various drafts over the course of ten months, including vessels that can transport between 8,000 and 12,000 containers. “The amount has increased significantly if we compare it with the last two years, when an average of 270 vessels entered,” they stated.

As for imports that took place through TPG, 58% were logistics equipment, industrial machinery (parts and parts), paper, books and other items, metal products, vehicles and their parts, and plastic items. Most come from American, Asian and European countries.
