The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MTC) updated upward the estimated cost of the new Central Highway – Daniel Alcides Carrión, from the S/22,000 million planned last August to almost S/24,000 million.
From Huánuco, the head of the MTC, Raúl Pérez Reyes, maintained that the high mountain highway, which is being developed through the Government to Government (G2G) modality with France, has its future financing assured, a process in charge of the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF).
“This is, without a doubt, the largest public investment in the history of Peru […] The political will of President Dina Boluarte and the Government is that the new Central Highway project is going ahead,” said the minister.
PMO Vías, the company in charge of developing the project, hopes to optimize the 185-kilometer work in 2024 to further lower costs. The signing of the construction contract should still be defined in 2025, and the final delivery is scheduled for 2031.
New Central Highway: work will be ready in 2031
France took over the project in 2021 through a G2G agreement, after the need to modernize this central artery of the country was decreed in 2017. Among its first steps, the French country discarded a proposal presented by GORE Junín, due to design problems.
Nor was the proposal taken into account by the College of Engineers of Peru (CIP) of Lima, which formulated a route that began in La Chutana and reached the city of Huancayo.
The route proposed by PMO Vías begins on the same Central Highway, near Ate Vitarte (Lima), and then returns to it in Pachacaca (Yauli). The objective is to connect the cities of Lima and La Oroya in 2 and a half hours for small vehicles, and 3 for heavy vehicles.
The work includes 32 kilometers of tunnels-including 7 tunnels of more than 1 kilometer-, 18 kilometers of viaducts, 18 kilometers of retaining walls, 8 grade interchanges, 5 rest areas and 3 service areas. The average speed of operation 70km/hr.
