Budget 2024 includes S/439 million for Peru to adapt to new trade standards

These weeks are key for the approval of the 2024 public budget, a proposal that was submitted at the end of August by the Executive Branch and is currently being discussed by the Congressional Budget Commission. Given this, the head of the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), Alex Contreras, explained how the resources allocated for next year will be distributed.

The project of initial opening budget (PIA) for 2024 will amount to S/241,000 million. This means a growth of 12.1% compared to 2023. In addition, the allocated resources are mainly concentrated in the functions of education, health, transportation, public order and security.

Resources to boost trade

According to the head of the MEF, the budget for 2024 includes resources that aim at economic growth and productive development. For this reason, it seeks to allocate S/439 million in order to promote trade standards. In detail, these resources are directed to Senasa, Sanipes, Digesa and Digemid to improve care and streamline processes of health agencies (health surveillance and management processes, inspection, product traceability, inspections, laboratories, among others).

“In the face of the challenges imposed by international trade, in this budget we are giving resources to institutions to attend to and streamline some processes in health agencies. For example, there is a new regulation in the European Union to which we have to adapt and, along those lines, this budget has these 10 elements that are central that will influence the growth and conditions of the citizens,” explained Minister Contreras.
