César Delgado Aparicio, Social Management Manager of Southern Perú, confirmed that exploration work in Michiquillay, one of the most important copper projects in the portfolio of the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem), remains in the evaluation stage.
Before the decentralized session of the Energy and Mines Commission of Congress, held in Cajamarca, the representative said that these works are carried out at the same time as the socialization of the mine with the adjacent community.
“We are currently carrying out all the work of evaluating the deposit, so that it allows us to know how the project will develop from a technical point of view,” said Delgado.
Michiquillay is a world-class mining project with inferred mineral resources of 2,288 million tons with an estimated ore grade of 0.43%. When developed, the mine, located in the La Encañada district, is expected to produce 225,000 tons of copper per year.
In May 2018, a transfer contract was signed between Southern and the Peruvian State. Between October 2021 and 2022, exploration work and approval of the semi-detailed Environmental Impact Study (EIA) began. With this, the exploration work begins.
“We have also been working on all the environmental and social aspects that allow us to know how we are going to develop this project, in coordination with our entire sphere of influence,” said the manager.
