The government of newly elected President Daniel Nobo Azín will also be responsible for renegotiating contracts with mobile phone operators that have been extended so as not to affect customer service.

The contract with Clara expired on August 26, and a six-month extension was signed, which came into effect on August 27. That Otecel (Movistar) expires on November 30 this year and “at the moment, the Agency for Regulation and Control of Telecommunications (Arcotel) and Otecel are in the process of signing the appropriate extension”, commented the executive director of the Association of Telecommunications Companies (Asetel), Patricia Falconí.

State contract with telephone company Claro extended for six months

In this context, he pointed out that “before the renegotiation process itself, it is the government of the newly elected president Daniel Noboa that must continue and solve the renewal processes of the two concession contracts, considering the change of government and the current state of the process.”

Falconí also indicated that at the moment they have not had any contact with the new Government, but that they are waiting to find out about the transition process and who will be the new government of Arcotel.

Nobo Azín’s possession is scheduled for next Thursday, November 23.

When the extension of the six-month contract with Clara was announced, the minister of telecommunications, Vianna Maino, also indicated that they are taking steps to extend this operator, which has about four million subscribers.

Falconí added that “it is important to remember that the extension of the service is a mechanism to provide continuity of the mobile service that Ecuadorians have today.”

Arcotel’s decision pauses negotiations with Clara and Movistar for 120 days when the contracts expire

The renegotiation process has been put on hold. Last May, Arcotel announced that the renegotiations were suspended because of the ongoing evaluation of the radio spectrum, which must be carried out by the entity together with the International Telecommunication Union.
