INEI: 7 out of every 10 Peruvians have an informal job

During the third quarter of this year, 17 million 207,200 people were working in the country, which meant a drop of 0.9% compared to the same period in 2022, that is, around 156,800 citizens stopped having jobs between July and Septemberaccording to the Permanent National Employment Survey (EPEN) carried out by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).

In detail, the greatest drop in employment is observed in the rural area, with 207,400 people who lost it in the third quarter, while in the urban area an increase of 0.4% was recorded, which meant that 50,500 citizens joined to the employed population.

Employment without benefits

Between October 2022 and September 2023, 17 million 362,400 people were reported working, of which 71.9% did so informally, That is, 7 out of every 10 Peruvians have a job that is not subject to national legislation, without social protection coverage and without work-related benefits.. Meanwhile, only 28.1% of the employed population was working formally and had all the benefits of the law.

In rural areas, the situation is more critical, since 9 out of 10 rural workers had informal employment. While in the urban area, 66.3% worked in precarious conditions.
