Dozens of retirees from the Ministry of Health, who arrived from various provinces of Ecuador, held a rally this morning at the Financial Platform, where the Ministry of Finance is located, in the north of Quito. Therefore, they asked the State Portfolio to cancel the values corresponding to their pension incentives. These debts have been going on since 2016, that is, since the government of Rafael Correa. However, they fear that this Government will leave, and what belongs to them has not yet been paid.
Several pensioners carried banners and sang the famous song “In life you wanted me”, but with the variation “In life you pay me, in death for what?” In the meantime, officials of the aforementioned ministry could attend the commission.
These days, the Financial Platform has been the scene of several protests. Last Friday, for example, the State Association of Suppliers arrived, to which they owe about 10 million dollars from September and October. This was commented by Marco Leguízamo, the representative of this group. He explained that there are at least 60 companies that are in this problem and that they are part of their association.
That same Friday, they were received by Finance Minister Humberto Ramírez, who offered them that they could be paid in bonds (for one year). This proposal is currently being shared among all members to gauge its reception. For Leguízamo, the problem is that if they get bonuses, they will only become effective after a year, but on the other hand, if there are companies that urgently need liquidity, they will come with a penalty, which according to their polls would amount to 5%.
In the past, there have also been lawsuits by devolved governments for non-payment. IESS is another entity to which the state owes the payment of 40% of pensions.
