At the end of the third quarter of 2023, accumulated copper production in Peru recorded an increase of 16% (2 million 005,957 fine metric tons, FMT) compared to the same period in 2022 (1 million 728,967).
According to the Mining Statistical Bulletin (BEM), in September the production of the red metal reported 235,178 TMF, a progress of 2.5% compared to September of the previous year (229,490 TMF), leveraged by the higher levels of Quellaveco (+44.1%), The Bambas (+18.2%) and Marcobre (+22.4%).
“It is important to mention that Anglo American Quellaveco SA began commercial operation in September 2022, reporting 20,262 TMF; and, as of the ninth month of 2023, the owner has produced more than 225,000 TMF,” highlights the report.
At the level of mining owners, Cerro Verde maintained the first position in copper production with a share of 17.8%. In second place was Antamina with 15.5% of the total; while, in third place was Southern Perú with 13.4% of the total participation.
At the departmental level, Arequipa consolidated itself as the main contributor with 18% of total production, thanks to Cerro Verde. Meanwhile, Moquegua occupied second place with 16.8%, thanks to Quellaveco. Third place goes to Áncash and its 15.8% driven by Antamina.
“In this way, the three departments at the end of the third quarter together contributed 50.6% of national copper production,” highlights Minem.
