According to the latest Regional Digital Connectivity Index 2023 (ICDR 2023), prepared by DN Consultores and American Tower, 11 regions in Peru have low connectivity. Loreto is the most relegated.
“In the 4 least connected regions (Amazonas, Huánuco, Cajamarca and Loreto), its rural population is equivalent to 46% of its total population; while in the 3 most connected regions (Metropolitan Lima, Arequipa, Moquegua) there is a rural population equivalent to 5% of its population total, that is, there is a clear inverse relationship according to which, the greater the rurality, the less development in digital connectivity,” stated Carlos Huamán, CEO of DN Consultores.
In detail, Metropolitan Lima heads the list with 84 points. Arequipa and Moquegua follow. Compared to the analysis before the pandemic, they have improved.
It should be added that, at the end of 2022, 79.2% of homes in the capital alone had an internet connection, 4.1% more than in the bicentennial, added to the fact that 90.9% of homes in poor situation had a cell phone.
Renzo Escobar, general manager of American Tower, stated that promoting the deployment of telecommunications infrastructure is the first step to have the networks available.
“However, the ICDR shows us the importance of not stopping there. Without the layers of value associated with the mastery and productive use of ICT, we will not be able to have a truly connected and digitally included country.
