On Friday, November 3, the VII edition of the International Specialty Coffee Fair (Ficafé 2023)in which some business conferences between local producers and global companies were scheduled.
Angelica Matsudaexecutive president of PromPerú, told La República that It was estimated to close contracts for US$3.5 million for the benefit of coffee-growing families in Puno, Cusco, Junín, Piura, Cajamarca, Amazonas and San Martín.
“There are 90 exporters from 8 regions of the country who will try to link up with 27 buyers from the 5 continents. We are careful with expectations, but this journey is important. Not only with the opening of the fair, but because (the buyers) did tastings, visited the plants and then they will go to other regions,” he said.
It should be added that specialty coffees barely have a share of close to 3% in exports—unlike conventional coffee, which with 85%, according to Matsuda, is Peru’s most emblematic agro-export product. Furthermore, these beans have a genuine flavor and, as they are worked in soils that exceed 1,300 meters above sea level, and each region has its own richness in terms of body, acidity, aroma and fragrance.
The Ficafé was held until Monday, November 6 at the National University of the Altiplano. Richard Hancco, regional governor of Puno, calculated that in general terms S/51 million would be generated, considering the large number of stands that will offer not only specialty coffees, but also derivatives and crafts.
Get tourism in Puno out of lethargy
PromPerú also organized a business conference for ventures dedicated to tourism, and it is expected to raise S/1.5 million. It is the first time that these direct connections have been made with potential buyers—the majority from Lima—which will unite the Puno industry with foreign tourists.
In a year where the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) expects just over 2.2 million foreigners to arrive, Promperú seeks to promote tourist activity in Puno, since in the face of frost and social protests against the Government of Dina Boluarte, declined. “Puno has a lot of potential,” summarized Matsuda.
