The Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP) has been actively driving the adoption of digital payments since March 31 of this year, when interoperability between digital wallets began Yape and Plin.

In accordance with Eduardo Torres Llosageneral manager of the BCRP, the objective of this institution is “get a snowball effect” in the use of digital payments, starting with people who are within the financial system, in order to promote financial inclusion in the country. “It starts with the banked, generating volume and movement so that this gains critical mass (for digital adoption)”commented during his participation in the TECHXPERIENCE UP.

In that sense, he highlighted the interoperability plan promoted by the BCRP, which began to be executed in the first half of this year and is composed of four phases. “The first phase was to interconnect the large electronic wallet issuers, Yape and Plin to be specific,” commented Torres Llosa. He explained that this operation has led these payment methods to carry out 45 million transactions per month.

In addition, he recalled that the second phase involves the rest of the financial entities that are operating through the Electronic Clearing House (CCE) also interconnecting, along with the interoperability of the QR code. The third phase, for its part, includes electronic money issuing companies, and the fourth phase, that Fintechs, Big Techs and Telcos can also participate in this ecosystem.
